A Brief History of The Department Of Botany:
The Department of Botany was introduced in 1945, offering only the I.A. course under the University of Calcutta. In 1959, the University granted affiliation to the B.A. course in Botany. The Higher Secondary course was discontinued around 2000. B.Sc.(Hons.) affiliation was granted by the University 2005 but only as a self-financing course with only 15 seats, and with Chemistry, Psychology, Geography and Statistics as subsidiary subjects. In 2008, the Honours course changed to a Govt. Sponsored one from the self-financing option, thus attracting more students. The first batch of Honours students fared quite wellin the University final e xams, with one student becoming the college-topper and Univ. rank-holder. Sheis currently pursuing the PhD degree. The number of seats in the department was increased to 22 from 15 in 2014. Zoology was introduced in 2016 as the ideal combination subject for Botany. Within a span of about 10 years the laboratory has undergone a lot of upgradation and is currently quite well-equipped, though somewhat lacking in adequate space.
